Think you’ve got range?

One of the best ways to improve as a voice actor is to push your vocal boundaries. That’s exactly what this voice over styles challenge is designed to do!

In a recent video I made, I tackled 18 different voice over styles in just 60 seconds – from smart assistant to villain to BBC drama. And now it’s your turn to try!

The 18 Voice Over Styles in 60 Seconds

Here’s your challenge: Watch the video and then try to match as many styles as you can. Don’t worry about being perfect. The goal is to expand your versatility and recognize the subtle (and not-so-subtle) shifts in delivery.

Why it works:

  • You stretch your vocal range
  • You sharpen your style recognition
  • You train your voice to pivot quickly – a key skill for fast-paced auditions

Want to Improve Your Voice Over Range? Focus on These 3 Skills

This challenge isn’t just about imitation. It’s about training with intention. To truly develop vocal flexibility and range, here are three essential areas to focus on:

  1. Master Vocal Placement and Technique
Vocal placement allows you to control the tone, texture, and energy of your voice.

Want something smooth and grounded? Drop your voice into your chest.
Need quirky or animated? Try placing it higher in the head or nasal cavity.
For drama or authority? Add depth and diaphragmatic support for a commanding tone.

Combine this with breath control, pacing, articulation, and pitch modulation to fine-tune your delivery for each specific style. The more control you build, the more confidently you can shift voice over styles without strain or slipping out of character.

  1. Get Into Character
Voice acting is still acting. To pull off a style convincingly, you have to fully step into the mindset of that character or brand voice.

Ask yourself: What’s their attitude? What’s their point of view?

Whether you’re a hyper-caffeinated squirrel or a sophisticated luxury narrator, embody the emotion and personality behind the read. Even commercial spots require intention – the “relatable guy next door” or the “sassy expert” still needs to feel authentic.

  1. Don’t Hold Back. Be Bold and Go Big
One of the biggest mistakes in exploring different voices is holding back.

New styles often feel unnatural at first, and that’s okay. But playing it too safe leads to bland, forgettable reads.

Push your boundaries! Experiment with more emotion, higher energy, and bold choices. You can always pull back – but you can’t add in energy that wasn’t there to begin with.

Record, Reflect, Repeat

Once you’ve tried the challenge, record your reads and listen back with a critical ear. Where do you shine? Where can you tighten things up?

This simple self-review helps you improve faster – and uncovers vocal strengths you might not have noticed.
