Many actors spend a lot of energy trying to sound like a professional voice actor.

One of my favorite questions to ask students has nothing to do with microphones or script analysis.
I simply ask:
“Are you having fun with this?”
It may sound like a simple question, but it often reveals a lot.
When actors become overly focused on getting everything “right,” auditions can start feeling like tests instead of opportunities to tell a story. Every sentence becomes something to perfect rather than something to communicate.
That pressure can create performances that feel tight or overly controlled.
When you genuinely understand the script and allow yourself to enjoy bringing it to life, your reads often become more relaxed, connected, and engaging.
Listeners can hear that difference.
Gear Supports the Performance
There will likely come a time when upgrading your equipment makes sense.
A quieter recording space, a better microphone, or improved acoustic treatment can certainly elevate your overall sound.
But equipment is most valuable when it’s supporting a strong performance rather than trying to compensate for a weak one.
Voice over performance choices are what give an audition its personality, intention, and emotional truth.
The microphone simply captures what is already there.
