What can I bring that others might not?
Do I have a unique tone, life experience, or delivery style that makes this read pop?
Am I adding subtle flavor while still honoring the specs?
Sometimes, just a touch of “you” is what makes the read stick. This might be the secret superpower that sets you apart and gets you booked.
Pro tip: The goal isn’t to go off script. It’s to stay true to it while letting your authenticity shine through.
2. Don’t Forget to Play
Secondly, in the pursuit of perfection, many voice actors lose the very thing that books the job: energy, emotion, and enjoyment.
If you’re overthinking your reads or trying to “sound right,” you may actually be pushing the magic away.
Here’s what I tell my students:
- Smile while you record
- Imagine you’re telling a story to a friend
- Stop trying to sound like everyone else. Just be YOU.
In summary, playfulness isn’t unprofessional…it’s what brings scripts to life. And sometimes, the fun is what gets you noticed.
