I’m sitting in my car before going live at a corporate event I’m hosting, and I’ll be honest – it still makes me a little uncomfortable.

No edit button.
No redo.

If I mess up, people hear it.

And after more than 20 years in voice over, that feeling hasn’t completely gone away.

But I do it anyway.

Because this is part of the work!

If you’re working on building voice over confidence, this is something you need to understand early:

Discomfort isn’t a sign that you’re not ready. It’s a sign that you’re stepping into the next level of your growth.

Why Voice Over Confidence Feels So Uncomfortable

Most actors think confidence means feeling calm, certain, and fully in control.

But that’s not how growth actually works.

The moments that build real voice over confidence are the ones where:

  • You don’t have a safety net

  • You can’t redo the performance

  • You have to make choices in real time

Live hosting.
Directed sessions.
High-stakes auditions.

These are the moments that stretch you.

And naturally, they feel uncomfortable.

That discomfort isn’t a problem. It’s the environment where confidence is built.

As an online voice over coach, I see this all the time. Actors think they need to feel ready before stepping into these situations, when in reality, stepping into them is what creates readiness.

Your First Directed Session Will Feel Like This

If you haven’t done a directed session yet, here’s what you can expect:

You’ll feel exposed.
You’ll feel uncertain.
You’ll probably feel a little nervous.

Someone will give you direction.
You’ll have to adjust on the spot.
You won’t have time to overthink.

And that can feel intimidating.

But it’s also one of the fastest ways to build voice over confidence.

Because you start to realize something important:

You can handle it.

You can take direction.
You can adjust.
You can stay in the moment and keep going.

That’s where real confidence comes from.

Confidence Comes From Doing, Not Waiting

One of the biggest mistakes actors make is waiting to feel confident before they take the next step.

They think:

“I’ll do that when I feel more ready.”
“I need more time before I try that.”

But confidence doesn’t come from waiting.

It comes from doing the thing that feels uncomfortable.

Every time you step into a situation where there’s no edit button and no redo, you’re building experience.

And that experience turns into confidence.

This is one of the core principles I teach as an online voice over coach. The goal isn’t to eliminate discomfort. It’s to learn how to move forward with it.

What to Do When You Feel That Discomfort

The next time you feel that hesitation before a live session, a corporate hosting event, or a directed read, pause and reframe it.

Instead of thinking:

“I’m not ready for this.”

Try this:

“This is part of the work.”
“This is how I grow.”
“This is what I’ve been working toward.”

That shift changes how you approach the moment.

You stop resisting it.

And you start stepping into it.

Everything You Want Is on the Other Side

The opportunities you want in voice over don’t come from staying in your comfort zone.

They come from stepping into situations where you:

  • Have to trust your training

  • Have to make choices in real time

  • Have to show up fully

That’s where growth happens.

That’s where confidence is built.

Everything you want in this career lives on the other side of moments like this.
